Letter to the Editor
St George Leader
I was saddened to read of Tom Uren’s passing on Australia Day , 2015. I recall that he addressed my Year 12 General Studies students , St George Girls High School in possibly the early 1980’s . He spoke on anti – nuclear issues . The Atomic Energy Commission later provided their viewpoint on the topic .
Tom was a down to earth person ,whose personal background clearly shaped his politics. He will be particularly remembered for having used the political environment to fight for social justice issues. Tom took principled stands on so many different issues, and for this he was respected across politics.
Tom was a Minister for Urban and Regional Development in the Whitlam Ministry . He established the Australian Heritage Commission and the Register of the National Estate amongst many other achievements .

Tom was an amazing man , who dedicated his life to the service of the Australian nation . A life served with distinction ,Tom . Rest in peace.
