Princess Diana – The Twentieth Anniversary of her Death

Diana – Princess of Wales 1997

On August 31, 2017 it will be 20 years since Princess Diana’s passing .

I was attending a joint St George Councils  boat trip  for Councillors and Council Officers  on the Georges River that day . I, like so many other people, recall feeling very sad at the news of her untimely death.

Billions of people around the world watched Princess Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997. It was a fitting tribute to her short life.

A late friend of mine, Cavalier Tony Facciolo  OAM   had met Princess Diana on a number of occasions . Tony was the head concierge at  the Wentworth   Hotel  , later  the  Sheraton Wentworth  . He met Diana, when she attended State functions  at the hotel, when she was visiting Sydney.

Tony had met many celebrities  , politicians, and world leaders   in his time as  Concierge and later Head Concierge at the hotel . He told me that “he adored Audrey Hepburn and Danny Kaye.”However,  Diana was a favourite of his as well . Tony recalled her beautiful blue eyes,  and  always  admired her beauty.

I have a framed typed copy of Diana’s Order of Service , along with United Kingdom commemorative stamps of Diana .  I also  have a Princess Diana  Aynsley  china plate.

I particularly enjoy wearing  the Princess Diana  tartan, in either a long shawl , or a shorter silk scarf. The tartan ,which was purchased for me in Edinburgh, Scotland  is in a beautiful blue colour.

Diana’s legacy lives on through her two sons, William and Harry.  It endures in the charities with which she was associated , and in the causes such as landmines,  which she championed.
