I have led an interesting and challenging life . In life’s journey to date, I have met many interesting people, visited many places, both within Australia and overseas, and undertaken many interesting things. My life to date has been “a story.”
I grew up in Newcastle as an only child. Whilst I remember an interesting and happy childhood, it was somewhat lonely without any siblings . It taught me to be self -contained.
My parents took me on many outings and holidays. It is from this that I gained my sense of adventure, and love of history, which has stayed with me all of my life.
I was educated in Newcastle and began my university career at Macquarie University , North Ryde in 1972. University was somewhat of a culture shock after school – a case of sink or swim . I enjoyed Macquarie as a University .
From a young age I wanted to be a teacher. I enjoyed reading, and perhaps showed elements of my creative side.
My first teaching appointment was in Wollongong in 1976. I was forced to move from the family home in Ryde and to have to look after myself . Independence at last …. I met Harold in May 1976; we were free spirits and partners for almost 36 years until his death in September 2011. He played football, so I got to know all the South Coast football grounds and to appreciate football .
I was transferred to St George Girls High School, Kogarah at the end of February 1977, where I remained for 35 years until December 2011. Teaching at St George was a challenge ,which I enjoyed. My teaching subjects were largely Geography, Legal Studies and Commerce .
I returned to Macquarie University in 1980 to begin studies in Urban Geography . This course initiated my interest in social history and the urban environment . I was fortunate to have excellent lecturers, who displayed a passion for their teaching subjects.
In late 1985, I was appointed as a Director to the St George Hospital Board, which was an interesting training ground for my subsequent 17 years as a Councillor in Local Government. I was elected to Rockdale Council in 1991 , re-elected in 1995 and then elected to Kogarah Council in 1999 and re-elected in 2004.
Local Government was challenging There were a number of controversial issues ,which were time consuming and stressful . I had many interests when on Council, and had the opportunity to chair many Committees .I learned much about our local area.
My Council career came to an end in 2008; my school career came to an end in December 2011. The NSW Parliament acknowledged my long contribution, in both areas, with a Notice of Motion in 2012. It was time to move on to my third career – to work with the written word.

I have been working for some time on The History of Moorefield racecourse,1888-1951. Other creative projects are in the pipeline.
Over the years I have travelled extensively – Britain , Europe , New Zealand ,USA and Fiji . I have also travelled extensively throughout Australia. Many a story is contained in my travels.
My journey in the Southern Ocean, in April 2012, reflects my ongoing sense of adventure . This journey features on You Tube, and hopefully one day will become an e book .
Recently , I received a message from one of my 2008 year 12 Legal Studies students . She reminded me of the great stories I told the class, and what fun we had in class. My students were fortunate to have a teacher, who had diversified life experiences.
In conclusion,my life is like a tapestry – a multi-dimensional story . Some of the people I have met, regardless of age, have inspired me in different ways. I consider life’s journey to be an ongoing learning curve . I hope that I inspire others in life’s journey. If I have done this then “my story” will be somewhat complete. My life really is a story ………..
