BACKGROUND

I am a retired teacher of 36 years  experience. I  played sport – netball ,hockey and was a sprinter in my youth .In recent years I have swum and I  I walk . I have 3 adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. who need exercise.

I had an operation on my lower spine . My disc was bone on bone and I required a lumbar fusion , as a result of wear and tear and much sitting over too many years. No one reinforces the point to you that too much siting is not good for you .There are campaigns for many other medical issues, but spinal awareness has crept through the cracks, so to speak .

1)Networks

One needs to have a good network of help set up for when you come home from hospital-transport , shopping ,gardening amongst others. There are community groups , who can assist you . The Hospital staff provide you with the appropriate brochures, and then it is up to you.   I decided to rely on a couple of trusted friends to assist me ; one did the gardening, and another looked after the transport needs . I did online shopping.  Friends helped with other tasks.

2)Mobility  and  Assistance  Aids

When I returned  from hospital , I  was in pain and needed to be cautious about my movements . This included showering and getting into and out of bed.   I came home with my grabber ,which assisted me to pick things up . Inevitably,  too many things fell onto the ground .

My 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels normally eat from a china plate – this had to be  replaced by a plastic plate . If I dropped the plate it did not matter that it was plastic. I simply could not get to the floor to pick up pieces of a shattered china plate.

After 6 weeks of wearing a brace I was able to take it off . The brace stopped me bending in appropriately .  By the end of  the six weeks ,  I was walking freely and confidently .

I was then  able to drive my car short distances. I had gained my independence again .

3)Sitting – ergonomic chair

One must learn to not sit for too long , and to sit on appropriate chairs.  No one reminds us of this .Stand up desks are very practical and are becoming  increasingly popular. They are most  suitable for people who have had back injuries. Some Victorian schools have sensibly introduced them into the classroom .

I sit for about half an hour and then need to get up and stretch .

4) Exercise

I was told by the neurosurgeon to walk  daily . I followed these instructions.  I am at the present time able to walk in a heated pool but not do laps. This will happen when my fusion’s success has been confirmed from a cat scan.

SUMMARY

Our lifestyle today lends it to forcing us to sit – at the computer , in the office , in front of the TV and in our journeys to and from work . Think of how much you sit in a day … and then think of how much you exercise.
