Harold passed away in Kogarah, Sydney on September 30, 2011.

Harold was born near Wakefield, Yorkshire in England; my great grandfather, William Field was born in Wakefield  in 1831.  He was a good football player, playing goal keeper for Fryston Colliery Welfare.

In his footballing career In Yorkshire, he was always known as Archie. Harold’s football team won the 1963 West Riding County FA Challenge Cup; a significant achievement for a Colliery side.

Harold emigrated to Australia in 1970, where he continued his football career, initially in Wollongong, and then later in the St George area of Sydney.

When Harold died, my dog breeder, Rhonda and I, decided that my next Cavalier KIng Charles Spaniel would be named after both Harold and Prince Harry. Harold was usually called Harry, although he was usually called Harry Aggro on the football field.

Harold is remembered in my beautiful Blenheim Cavalier, Harry, whom I took ownership of on October 8, 2012. He is also remembered in a Memorial Football Award:the Rookie of the Year Award for the under 21’s at Dapto Dandaloo Football Club, Wollongong. The inaugural Memorial Award was presented on October 6, 2012.

Harold received a number of mentions in the publication “Coal, Goals and Ashes” by Professor Dave Waddington of Sheffield University. Harold also features on the cover of this book, jumping for a football, in his role as the team’s goal keeper.

I further commemorated Harold’s memory in a bottle, which I committed to the ocean off Eden, southern NSW on September 30, 2012. This was the first anniversary of Harold’s passing.

I put two bottles overboard. One bottle contained “my Wakefield, Yorkshireconnections”, and the other one, which I was recommitting to the ocean, contained my Scottish Grannie’s life story.

Harold was a proud Yorkshireman. I can hear him now, with his Yorkshire accent, saying “bloody hell”, upon finding out how he had been remembered.
